Overall this is a B movie creature feature, but it's carried out with such style and aplomb that it's hugely enjoyable throughout.
The rest of the cast are filled out by what could be kindly described as B list stars (except maybe Bill Duke), but Carl Weathers and ex-wrestler Jesse Ventura do well. Schwarzenegger isn't wearing his star power on his sleeve like he does in other films and is good here. But the film benefits from a strong male cast - not great actors but they all fit the parts well. If the tension was so good then this could have been a slasher style film with each character being bumped off in a series of gory ways. The film manages to create a great sense of tension by not revealing the predator until near the end, this means we, like the commandos, are not quite sure what's doing the hunting.
Once the issue of the airmen rescue is forgotten it is a straight hunt or be hunted affair. This ranks as one of Schwarzenegger's best films, mainly because he doesn't ham up the one-liners etc and just plays it straight. With his teams' numbers dwindling, Dutch decides to take a stand. However as they travel back across the jungle they are picked off one by one by an unseen assassin. During the rescue attempt the airmen and the terrorists are killed and the commandos being to return to their pickup location. The final area of this level is the Premier's office, where the protagonists have to make sure he does not escape through the helicopter.A team of commandos are sent into a central American jungle to extradite US airmen that are being held by terrorists. The protagonists will also undergo a dangerous hallucination where they have to destroy a series of organic doors as a wall of flesh pursues them.Īfter the Recreation Room, the protagonists are attacked by an Assault Helicopter, and then move through the aquarium, one of the visitors "Special Rooms", where the encounter the Premier, this section leads to the penultimate area of this level, the Vault, where where the protagonists get to wield a Katana against wave after wave of enemies, now including Snipers and Combatants.
The Penthouse begins with the protagonists rushing out of the elevator for the first section of the level, where they will face off against Bratoks, Bodyguards, Spetsnaz Operatives, and the Bratva in the very first room, after that, they trasverse through the Recreation Room, where members of the USSR's high society wait in the background. There is a vault room which contains countless riches and even exotic treasures from foreign lands, like a Japanese Katana. It is a massive building with a luxurious interior where every last resident of a small village could live comfortably in and there would still have room for more people, and it is also incredibly tall to boot, as there are elevators for the inhabitants and visitors of the building to get from floor to floor. The Penthouse is presumably the government office of The Premier himself, where Spetsnaz Operatives, members of the Military, the Bratva, and various other hoodlums as well as the upper crust of the USSR are residing in fear of the rebellion outside.
